Tyler ISD Calls $513M Bond Election for Nov 5 Vote

Tyler ISD's Board of Trustees has called for a $513 million bond election, split into two propositions, to address facility needs across the district. The decision was made at a special meeting on Tuesday, August 21st, and will appear on the ballot for voters on November 5th, 2024. Early voting is scheduled to begin on October 21st, 2024.

The bond proposal follows months of work by the district's Long Range Facilities Planning Committee, comprised of parents, teachers, staff, and community members. The committee, which began its work in January 2024, submitted its recommendations in June, leading to the Board's unanimous decision to place the measures before voters.

Proposition A, totaling $485 million, is primarily aimed at constructing a new Chapel Hill High School, undertaking major renovations at Bell Elementary and Clarkston Elementary schools, and implementing significant additions and upgrades at various other elementary and middle school campuses. These improvements are designed to enhance safety, security, and technological capabilities throughout the district.

Proposition B, a smaller allocation of $28 million, is dedicated to developing new agriculture facilities. These facilities would be constructed at both the Tyler High School and Legacy High School campuses, supporting the district's agricultural science programs.

District officials state that the bond is projected to have no overall increase on the district's tax rate for taxpayers, as existing debt is set to expire, leading to an overall projected decrease in the tax rate. Additionally, property owners aged 65 and older with a homestead exemption will not experience a tax increase as a result of the bond. The district emphasizes that the bond addresses issues of growing student enrollment, aging infrastructure, and the need for modern learning environments and enhanced safety measures for students and staff.

Voters are encouraged to visit the Tyler ISD website, www.tylerisd.org, for detailed information regarding the bond propositions, project specifics, and voter registration information ahead of Election Day on November 5th, 2024.
