Henderson’s iconic Dairy Queen, located at 427 W. Main Street, recently marked its 74th anniversary, cementing its legacy as Texas’s oldest continuously operating Dairy Queen. The beloved local establishment, a staple for generations, first opened its doors on March 27, 1950.
Alton and Lucille Slay were the original founders who brought the popular frozen treat franchise to Henderson. Over seven decades later, the store continues to thrive under the ownership of Bill and Sheri Jones, who took the helm on July 1, 1978. Their long tenure has further solidified the Dairy Queen’s status as a community landmark.
The Henderson location proudly maintains its classic square sign, a recognizable symbol of Dairy Queen’s early days. An interesting historical note is the addition of "Hot Eats" to the menu board in 1951, expanding beyond the original ice cream offerings. While other Dairy Queen locations may have existed earlier in Texas, the Henderson store holds the distinction of uninterrupted operation at the same site.
Reflecting its humble beginnings, the original building measured just 20 by 20 feet. The initial franchise fee back in 1950 was a mere $1,000, a stark contrast to today’s costs, highlighting the enduring value and growth of the brand within the community. The 427 W. Main Street location remains a vibrant part of Henderson’s history and daily life.
