Tyler ISD's Board of Trustees officially approved the academic calendar for the 2024-2025 school year during their regular meeting on Monday, January 22. The new calendar sets the first day of school for students on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, with the last day scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Staff members will begin their work year earlier, with their first day set for Monday, August 5, 2024.
The approved calendar includes several extended breaks for students. Labor Day will be observed on Monday, September 2. A full Fall Break is scheduled from Monday, October 14, through Friday, October 18. Thanksgiving Break will also span a full week, from Monday, November 25, to Friday, November 29. Winter Break will commence on Monday, December 23, 2024, with students returning to classes on Monday, January 6, 2025. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, will be a professional development day for staff, with no school for students. Spring Break is slated for March 10 through March 14, and Good Friday on April 18 will also be a student holiday.
Two potential bad weather days have been designated as student holidays: Friday, February 14, and Friday, April 4. These days would become instructional days if needed to make up for unforeseen school closures. Early release days for students are scheduled for Wednesday, December 18, before Winter Break, and on the final day of school, Thursday, May 22.
The calendar, identified as "Option 1," was developed with input from the District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC). It received significant community support, with 76.8% of 3,061 responses favoring it in a district-wide survey conducted in November 2023 among students, parents, and staff.
The 2024-2025 Tyler ISD calendar includes a total of 170 instructional days, amounting to 79,200 instructional minutes. This figure exceeds the state's required 75,600 instructional minutes by 3,600 minutes, providing a buffer for the district located in Tyler, Texas.
