**The Oil Palace: Four Decades of Entertainment and Economic Impact in Tyler**
TYLER, Texas – The Oil Palace, a cornerstone of East Texas entertainment, continues to thrive in Tyler as it marks nearly four decades of operation, having opened its doors on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1983. Conceived by David and Leoma Adkisson with a vision for a faith-based entertainment venue, the facility has grown into a versatile arena hosting a wide array of world-class events and significantly contributing to the region's economy.
The Adkissons embarked on their ambitious project with remarkable dedication. David Adkisson served as the general contractor, with he, Leoma, and a network of friends and local businesses performing much of the construction themselves, including pouring cement and laying bricks. Despite David facing a serious stroke during construction, the family persevered. Initially envisioned as a non-profit space for Christian concerts, rodeos, and family-friendly events, The Oil Palace quickly expanded its offerings.
Located on an 80-acre property at 2500 South FM 14 in Tyler, the venue boasts 67,000 square feet under roof and a seating capacity for 6,500 attendees. Its robust design has allowed it to accommodate a diverse range of large-scale productions.
Over the years, The Oil Palace has attracted a lineup of legendary artists and events. Its stage has hosted country music icons such as George Strait, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, Brooks & Dunn, and Kenny Rogers. Christian music stars like Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, and TobyMac have also performed. Beyond concerts, the venue is a regular host for PBR rodeos, motocross, Monster Jam, the Tyler gun show, boxing matches, and circuses, catering to broad entertainment preferences. This extensive calendar draws visitors from a hundred-mile radius, bolstering local hotels, restaurants, and gas stations, making it a vital economic engine for Tyler and surrounding East Texas communities.
Remarkably, The Oil Palace remains a family legacy, owned and operated by David and Leoma Adkisson alongside their son, Greg. The venue has demonstrated resilience through various challenges, including economic downturns and the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, consistently adapting to continue its mission of providing quality entertainment.
As it approaches its 40th anniversary, The Oil Palace (OilPalace.com) stands as a testament to its founders' vision and enduring commitment, serving as a dynamic and indispensable cultural and economic asset for East Texas.
