Tyler ISD Approves May 4 Bond, No Tax Increase

Tyler, TX – The Tyler Independent School District Board of Trustees officially approved calling a $198,390,000 bond election on February 12, setting the stage for voters to decide on two propositions this spring. The election is scheduled for May 4 in Tyler, TX.

The substantial bond package is divided into two propositions, addressing a range of needs from campus infrastructure to technology upgrades, with district officials emphasizing there is no anticipated tax rate increase should the bond pass.

Proposition A, totaling $196,440,000, focuses on core needs including safety enhancements, improved instructional programs, accommodating student growth, and addressing aging facilities. Key projects under this proposition include the complete rebuilding of two elementary schools, Peete Elementary and Rice Elementary, transforming them into new, modern facilities. Additionally, both Legacy High School and Tyler High School are slated for significant renovations and additions, specifically targeting career technology programs, fine arts facilities, and athletic areas. District-wide, Proposition A would fund critical upgrades to HVAC systems, roofs, plumbing, and electrical infrastructure. A major component of this proposition is enhanced safety measures across all schools, such as new card access systems, upgraded camera surveillance, and secure vestibules at campus entrances.

Proposition B, amounting to $1,950,000, is dedicated to advancing the district's technological capabilities. This includes acquiring new devices for students and staff, and strengthening the overall network infrastructure throughout Tyler ISD.

The process for developing the bond package began in Fall 2023 with a Bond Planning Committee. This committee gathered extensive input from staff, students, and the wider community to identify the most pressing needs for the district over the coming years. Dr. Marty Crawford, Superintendent of Tyler ISD, highlighted that the proposed bond addresses "critical and essential needs" vital for the district's continued progress.
