**Women in Tyler Honor Four Trailblazing Leaders at Inaugural "Laying the Foundation" Event**
Tyler, TX – Women in Tyler held its inaugural "Laying the Foundation" event on the morning of November 17, 2025, at the Tyler Rose Garden Center, honoring four exceptional women whose historical contributions have significantly shaped the local community. The ceremony recognized Mae Bell Johnson, Louise Herrington Ornelas, Dr. Betty Sue Schuler, and Ann R. Taylor for their pioneering efforts in civic leadership, philanthropy, education, and journalism.
Mae Bell Johnson was celebrated for making history in 1976 as the first Black woman elected to the Tyler City Council. During her two terms, she was a vocal advocate for underserved communities and pushed for improved city services.
Philanthropist Louise Herrington Ornelas, co-founder of Ornelas Enterprises, was recognized for her extensive generosity. Her significant donations led to the establishment of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing at Baylor University in Dallas, TX, and she has been a dedicated supporter of the University of Texas at Tyler and local hospitals.
Dr. Betty Sue Schuler, a respected educator and community leader, was honored for her transformative leadership as the first female president of Tyler Junior College. Serving from 1982 to 1998, Dr. Schuler expanded academic programs and championed lifelong learning initiatives at the college, located at 1400 E 5th St, Tyler, TX 75701.
Ann R. Taylor, a prominent journalist and civic leader, received recognition as the first female editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph. During her impressive 20-year tenure, Taylor was known for her impactful investigative journalism and deep commitment to community involvement.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, president of Women in Tyler, emphasized the profound impact of the honorees. "These women literally laid the groundwork for so much of what we enjoy in Tyler today," Reed stated.
Each honoree received a special commemorative plaque during the event, which also featured a delicious brunch. Mayor Sarah Jenkins delivered a keynote address, speaking eloquently about the vital importance of recognizing the powerful contributions women have made to the city.
Women in Tyler announced plans to make "Laying the Foundation" an annual event, with next year's ceremony already in the planning stages, aiming to continue celebrating the legacies of women leaders in the community.
