**Union Pacific Clears Homeless Encampment in Tyler, Citing Safety Concerns**
TYLER – Union Pacific has completed the clearance of a large homeless encampment located under the bridge on West Gentry Parkway, near North Palace Avenue in Tyler. The operation, which began on Monday, October 16, concluded on Tuesday, October 17.
Union Pacific stated that the clearance was prompted by serious safety concerns, not only for individuals residing in the encampment but also for railroad employees. Cited issues included unauthorized entry onto railroad property, the potential for debris to interfere with train operations, risks associated with open flames, accumulation of trash and human waste, and reports of criminal activity in the vicinity.
Prior to the commencement of the clearing operation, Union Pacific issued multiple notices. Initial vacate notices were posted on October 2, followed by an additional 72-hour notice issued before Monday morning, October 16.
The effort was a collaborative initiative involving Union Pacific, the City of Tyler, and several local organizations. Partners present on-site to offer support and resources included the Salvation Army, Bethesda Health Clinic, the Andrews Center, and PATH (People Attempting to Help). These groups provided affected individuals with various forms of assistance, including housing options, mental health services, and medical aid.
Any personal property left behind by individuals was collected and stored by Union Pacific. Arrangements have been made for property retrieval, with Union Pacific available by phone for the next 30 days for individuals wishing to reclaim their belongings.
To prevent future encampments and enhance safety in the area, Union Pacific plans to install fencing around the entire property.
