Tyler Documents Historic Buildings

Tyler, Texas – The City of Tyler initiated a comprehensive survey of historic buildings in the area north of Texas College in mid-April 2024, aiming to document architectural styles, historical significance, and physical conditions of properties.

The survey focuses on a specific corridor within Tyler, Texas, generally bounded by West Vance Street and East Queen Street to the north, West 4th Street to the south, and stretching from North Palace Avenue on the west to North Spring Avenue and North Ross Avenue on the east.

Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting (CMEC) is performing the fieldwork. Consultants will be on foot, observing and photographing building exteriors from public rights-of-way. Field staff will carry official City of Tyler identification badges and letters of authorization. They will not enter private property without prior permission.

This initiative is a core component of the City's Certified Local Government (CLG) program, a collaborative partnership involving the National Park Service (NPS) at www.nps.gov and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) at www.thc.texas.gov. The CLG program aims to enhance Tyler's role in local historic preservation efforts, aiding in the understanding of unique local architecture, informing future urban planning, and potentially identifying new historic districts. More information about the City of Tyler's preservation efforts can be found at www.cityoftyler.org.

The survey is expected to be completed within six to eight weeks. Findings will be presented to the public at a meeting tentatively scheduled for late June or early July 2024.
