Tyler, Texas – Dr. Marty Crawford will officially step down as Superintendent of Tyler Independent School District on June 30, concluding an eight-year tenure marked by significant academic and infrastructural advancements. The Tyler ISD Board of Trustees confirmed a mutual separation agreement during a special meeting held on June 19.
Dr. Crawford is transitioning to a new role as CEO of the Texas High School Coaches Association, which will necessitate a move to Austin, Texas. He began his service with Tyler ISD in July 2016.
Under his leadership, Tyler ISD saw its academic performance rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) improve from a "C" to a "B." His time as superintendent also oversaw the successful passage and implementation of two major bond packages: a $198 million bond in 2017 that led to the construction of new high schools, and a $340 million bond in 2022 aimed at addressing other district needs.
Further initiatives during Dr. Crawford's superintendency included increasing teacher salaries, establishing the "Tyler Way" cultural framework, and developing career and technology centers and early college high schools. He also secured significant grants, such as one from the Bezos Foundation for early learning, and guided the district through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Effective July 1, Dr. Larry D. Williams, Jr., who currently serves as Deputy Superintendent, will assume the role of interim superintendent. The Board of Trustees announced its intention to commence a search for a permanent replacement for the district's top leadership position.
