East Texas Norovirus Surge Prompts Warning

**Norovirus Surges Across East Texas, Health Officials Urge Caution**

**EAST TEXAS** – Local health officials are reporting a significant increase in norovirus cases across East Texas, prompting a public health warning for residents. Dr. Stephanie Johnson, Medical Director for Infection Prevention at Christus Health, issued the alert, noting a definite rise in what is commonly known as the "winter vomiting disease."

The highly contagious norovirus season typically spans from November through April, but East Texas is currently experiencing a notable surge, as highlighted in a warning issued on December 27, 2023.

Symptoms of norovirus are severe and include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and potentially a low-grade fever, body aches, and headaches. While symptoms usually last only one to three days, they can be debilitating. The virus spreads rapidly through contaminated food or water, touching infected surfaces, or direct contact with an infected person.

Dr. Johnson emphasized that standard alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus. Instead, thorough handwashing with soap and water is crucial for prevention. Additionally, diligent cleaning of surfaces, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, with a bleach-based cleaner is recommended to eliminate the virus.

Individuals who contract norovirus are advised to stay home from work or school for at least 24 to 48 hours after all symptoms have completely resolved to prevent further spread. Those who are ill should also refrain from preparing food for others.

Norovirus poses particular risks for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, due to the increased risk of dehydration. Residents of East Texas are urged to exercise heightened caution and follow preventive measures throughout the winter season.
