VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas – A 34-year-old man is in critical condition following a multi-vehicle pile-up involving three 18-wheelers early Wednesday morning on Interstate 20 in Van Zandt County. The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-20 near mile marker 565, just east of Farm to Market Road 1995 (FM 1995).
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident began when one 18-wheeler slowed due to traffic congestion. A second 18-wheeler then struck the rear of the first, followed by a third 18-wheeler striking the second.
The critically injured 34-year-old was transported by helicopter to UT Health Tyler (https://www.uthealthtyler.org/) for treatment. His identity has not yet been released.
The major collision forced the complete shutdown of eastbound I-20 for several hours, with traffic being rerouted onto the service road, causing significant delays for motorists throughout the morning.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Texas Department of Public Safety (https://www.dps.texas.gov/), the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, the Grand Saline Fire Department, and the Edgewood Fire Department. Investigations into the exact cause of the pile-up are ongoing.
