Norovirus Surges Early in East Texas

Tyler, TX – East Texas is experiencing an unusually early surge of norovirus, commonly known as the "winter vomiting disease," prompting health officials to issue warnings ahead of the typical season. Dr. Ben DuBois with UT Health East Texas in Tyler reports a significant increase in cases, much sooner than the usual November to April peak.

Norovirus causes sudden onset of symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and sometimes a low-grade fever, body aches, and headaches. Dr. DuBois noted that symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and generally last 24 to 72 hours, though the virus is highly contagious.

Unlike many common viruses, norovirus is not effectively combatted by alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Dr. DuBois strongly emphasized the critical importance of thorough handwashing with soap and water to prevent its spread. He also advised using a bleach solution to clean surfaces in homes or public spaces where someone has been sick, as the virus spreads easily through contaminated food, water, or surfaces.

The virus can be particularly severe for young children and older adults, with dehydration being the primary concern. There is no specific treatment for norovirus; recovery focuses on supportive care. Dr. DuBois recommended consuming plenty of clear fluids and electrolytes to stay hydrated and advised against anti-diarrhea medications. Individuals experiencing symptoms should stay home to prevent further transmission.
