TYLER – The Smith County Democratic Party announced Tuesday, December 3rd, its withdrawal from the upcoming Tyler Christmas Parade, scheduled to proceed through downtown Tyler on Thursday, December 5th.
The party stated its decision was made in solidarity with the Hispanic and Latino community, specifically concerning the state's new SB4 law. Democratic party leaders have critically described SB4 as a "show me your papers" law, noting that its legality is currently being contested in federal court.
Despite the Democratic Party's move, the Smith County Republican Party has confirmed it still plans to march in the parade. This year's event, a long-standing community tradition in downtown Tyler, holds the theme "Christmas Through the Decades."
The Democratic Party's decision to forgo participation in a major local event highlights growing political divisions surrounding the contested SB4 legislation within the community.
