Smith County I-20 grass fire burned 30 acres

SMITH COUNTY – Emergency crews battled a significant 30-acre grass fire that broke out along the eastbound service road of Interstate 20 in Smith County on Sunday afternoon, causing traffic disruptions and threatening nearby structures.

The blaze ignited around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, in the 18000 block of I-20 eastbound, specifically near Farm to Market Road 14 (FM 14). Initially estimated at 15 to 20 acres, the fire quickly spread due to strong winds and exceptionally dry conditions, ultimately consuming approximately 30 acres before being brought under control.

The intensity of the fire, which ran along the eastbound service road of I-20, necessitated the complete closure of that service road, leading to significant traffic backups for several hours. As a safety precaution, power lines in the area were affected, prompting Oncor to cut power to ensure the safety of responders and the public.

Multiple emergency services responded to the scene, including Smith County Emergency Services District No. 2, the Tyler Fire Department, and the Texas A&M Forest Service. ETMC EMS was also standing by to provide medical support if needed. Firefighters worked diligently against the challenging weather conditions to contain the aggressive flames.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and firefighters successfully protected several structures that were threatened by the fire. Crews managed to bring the fire under control later that afternoon, around 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Smith County ESD No. 2 Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire, with early indications pointing to the possibility of a vehicle origin.
