Tyler Boosts Driver Workforce with CDL Funding

**Tyler Launches "Driving Me Mentality" Program to Fund CDL Training Amid Driver Shortages**

TYLER, Texas – The City of Tyler and Tyler Independent School District (ISD) have partnered to launch "Driving Me Mentality," a new initiative aimed at addressing critical driver shortages across the community, particularly for school bus drivers. The program offers Tyler residents an opportunity to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the city covering the training costs.

The "Driving Me Mentality" program seeks to fill a significant need for qualified drivers in various sectors within Tyler. Tyler ISD currently faces 25 open positions for school bus drivers, a shortage that impacts the safe and timely transportation of students.

Under the new initiative, the City of Tyler will fully fund the CDL training for eligible participants. In return, individuals are required to commit to working for either the City of Tyler or Tyler ISD for a minimum of two years upon obtaining their license.

Earning a CDL opens numerous employment opportunities throughout Tyler. Graduates of the program could serve as city transit drivers, operate waste management vehicles, drive certain fire or police department vehicles, or become essential school bus drivers for Tyler ISD. The qualification is also highly valued by private sector companies across the region.

Neal Franklin, Transportation Director for Tyler ISD, underscored the program's importance, stating, "This initiative is crucial for making sure kids get to school safely and on time." Dr. Marty Crawford, Superintendent of Tyler ISD, echoed this sentiment, adding that the program is "about helping the community thrive" by addressing key logistical challenges.
