Tyler Crime Rates 2023: General Decline

Tyler, Texas – Violent crime in Tyler saw a significant decrease in 2023 compared to the previous year, contributing to an overall downward trend in the city's crime rates. Data released from the Tyler Police Department's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) indicates an 11.2% drop in violent offenses from 2022 to 2023.

The comprehensive statistics, detailed in the City of Tyler's 2023 annual report, reveal that murders decreased from 14 incidents in 2022 to 10 in 2023. Rapes also saw a notable reduction, falling from 72 reported incidents in 2022 to 52 last year. Robberies dropped from 84 to 79, while aggravated assaults decreased from 265 to 227 during the same period.

Property crime, while showing a slight overall decrease of 1.1% between 2022 and 2023, presented a more varied picture. Burglary incidents declined marginally from 428 cases in 2022 to 416 last year. Broader policing metrics indicate a slight dip in total arrests by the Tyler Police Department, with 7,984 arrests in 2023 compared to 8,252 the year prior. Conversely, traffic citations issued by Tyler PD increased substantially, rising from 12,049 in 2022 to 16,039 in 2023.
