Tyler ISD $503.9M Bond Approved for May 4 Election

Tyler ISD voters will decide on a $503.9 million bond package in the upcoming May 4th election, following final approval by the Board of Trustees on February 12th. The district projects the extensive bond, aimed at addressing growth, facility modernizations, and safety, will not require a property tax rate increase.

Proposition A, totaling $485.6 million, encompasses a wide array of projects. This includes the construction of two new 800-student elementary schools: one in south Tyler and another to replace the existing Bell Elementary site. Additionally, Bonner Elementary is slated for a complete rebuild, also designed for 800 students.

A new facility for Early College High School is planned, which will move the program from its current UT Tyler facility to the TJC Main Campus. Significant additions and renovations are also earmarked for Jackson Elementary, Peete Elementary, Owens Elementary, Rice Elementary, Andy Woods Elementary, Hubbard Middle School, Boulter Middle School, Caldwell Arts Academy, Hogg Middle School, Moore Middle School, John Tyler High School, Tyler High School, the CTE Center, and Boshears Center.

District-wide improvements under Proposition A include comprehensive safety and security upgrades, such as controlled entry vestibules and camera system enhancements. Furthermore, funds are allocated for ADA compliance initiatives, technology upgrades across the district, and the replacement of aging school buses.

Proposition B, a smaller allocation of $18.3 million, focuses exclusively on athletic facilities. This proposition would fund the construction of a new stadium at the John Tyler High School campus, providing the school with its own athletic venue rather than continuing to share Rose Stadium.

District officials project that the bond package will not lead to an increase in the property tax rate. This is attributed to growth in local property values and the strategic payoff of existing district debt.

The comprehensive bond package was developed over several months by a dedicated Facilities Planning Committee. This committee, comprised of 50 community members, met consistently from August 2023 through January 2024 to study district needs. They formally recommended the package to the Board of Trustees on January 22nd. The committee's work aimed to address various district priorities, including managing student growth, upgrading aging facilities, enhancing safety, and ensuring equitable facilities across all campuses.

Residents interested in voting in the May 4th election must register by the deadline of April 4th. Early voting will be available from April 22nd through April 30th. Election Day is Saturday, May 4th.
