Tyler ISD is moving closer to significant district boundary changes and school consolidations, driven by a steady decline in student enrollment. Following extensive community input and board workshops, the district is set to make a final decision on March 20th that could reshape several campuses and save millions annually.
The district has seen its student population drop by nearly 2,000 students since 2017, bringing current enrollment to approximately 17,200. Projections indicate a further decline to around 15,000 students by 2033. This trend has resulted in substantial underutilization across the district, with 30% of elementary schools operating at 50% capacity or less, and five out of six middle schools under 75% capacity.
The district hosted a dedicated workshop for the board and community on February 27th, followed by a large public meeting on February 29th at Robert E. Lee High School, which drew over a thousand attendees to discuss the proposed changes. These discussions have focused heavily on the 'South Central' area of the district.
Under current proposals, Bell Elementary School could close, with its students reassigned to Rice Elementary and Clark Elementary. Similarly, Peete Elementary School is being considered for closure, with its student body potentially moving to Owens Elementary and Caldwell Elementary.
Middle schools are also targeted for consolidation. Hogg Middle School is proposed to combine with Stewart Middle School, with all students attending the Stewart Middle School campus. Additionally, Hubbard Middle School could merge with Moore Middle School, with the combined student population moving to the Moore Middle School campus.
While a 'no change' scenario was presented, the district appears to be leaning towards consolidation, estimating potential annual savings ranging from $14 million to $20 million annually. Officials have also indicated that a future bond election might be necessary to fund improvements and upgrades for the remaining facilities.
The Tyler ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled to make a final decision regarding these boundary and consolidation plans at their upcoming meeting on March 20th. Further information and details on the proposals can be found on the Tyler ISD official website at www.tylerisd.org.
